Week 8

Week 8: Clients Revist

On the second client visit, our three remaining groups presented their advanced projects. The client responded favorably to all schemes, and allowed our studio to decide among ourselves to determine which project we would proceed with. Listed below are the three remaining groups.

"Gateway"

"Linear Randomness"

"Urban Landscape"

Ultimately, it came down to the practicality and material choice which Professor Frank Flury favored when making his final decision. Now as one collaboration, we are working to refine the "Urban Landscape" scheme. We have broken into subgroups to manage the tasks at hand. These task include: 1) media exploration 2) design and development 3) final 1/4" model for display to the Merchandise Mart Executives 4) viable color schemes 5) material economy/inventory.

Week 7: 5 down, 3 to go...

After presenting our 8 conceptual ideas to the Clients, we eliminated struggling/undeveloped ideas and married concepts of similar nature. Individually, each student was allowed to select the group they wanted to join, which helped to the ensure a certain level of enthusiasm being brought to the group. Of the 3 reamaing projects, the following titles were given: 1) Urban Landcape 2) Gateway 3) Linear Frames

Week 6

Six weeks into the semester we finally received our site. The site is located in the lobby of the 350 W. Mart Center which is part Merchandise Mart complex. We were now able to factor in the site context into our concepts.

Week 5: Client Critique

A few weeks have since past since Professor, Frank Flury, and our IIT studio had initially met with the Clients. During that time, we have been incubating and processing through conceptual ideas at a up-tempo rate. Comprised of 8 teams, our individual and collaborative efforts have enabled our studio to rapidly conceptualize ideas, aiding in the development of our springboard for design. At the Client Critique, each group presented their intial ideas through verbal explination, physical models and visual/graphic aids. Among the 8 teams, at this time, three of these teams were the furthest developed.

Team 1: Frank Malawski, Joe Peroni and Mike Beemsterboer

Scope of Exploration: Developing a recyclable, modulated system, which offers an exhibition for the display of boxes on one side, while media may displayed on the opposing side.

Team 2: Ivan Reyes, Sergio Pardo Lopez and Jannette

Scope of Exploration: To create a framework that sustains multiple funtions consisting of shelving, seating and table surface. The holistic approach, attempts to blend the individual components into a singular, uniform framework.

Team 3: Regina Lamonica, Patricia Frale Garrido and Jonathan Reinecke

Scope of Exploration: To develop a "kinetic" experience, by allowing the voyeur to physically interact with the exhibition. The progession of the models clearly demonstrates the systems evolution witch is achieved through the errosion of all unecessary elements, which completely changes the aesthetic by altering the density of the system.

Week 3 - 4

For the next couple of weeks we worked on the preliminary design. We separated into 8 different groups with different design techniques.
Scheme 1 - Joe P, Frank M., and Mike B.

Scheme 2 - Ivan R., Jeanette O., and Sergio L.

- Joe Peroni & Mike Beemsterboer

Week 2

For week 2 the studio spent most of their time in the shop. We learned more construction techniques which included different types of joints and fastening strategies.

We also made thousands of scaled boxes to begin our investigations into our design strategies.

Exploring how much space is required.
Experimenting with our media.

Week 1: The Basics

For the first week of our studio we hit the ground running, by learning the basics. Take a look for yourself!

Marta hammering

Diego cutting

And the rest of us learning how to properly dismantle and demolish framing.
